couture fashion

The term "haute couture" is a French legal term that certifies a select group of designers who create exquisite custom clothes. Similarly the term "couture" is used in the fashion industry to identify unique, one-of-a-kind, garments and incorrectly used to refer to lines of fashionable, "ready to wear" clothes manufactured for mass merchandising. We consider couture fashions to be limited edition garments that are produced by boutique designers. The number of garments in a collection is limited by the amount of fabric available in specific lot. Designers seek unique patterns and weaves to design their lines. In many instances only a single gown is produced in a particular style. Other items may be limited to four or six items in different sizes and as such are considered one-of-a-kind.

Couture fashion offers unique opportunities for the photographer. Each outfit has it's own unique characteristics. It may have unusual colors and patterns. It may have a unique texture or weave. There may be elaborate and ornate decoration with sequins and beads. The sewing may create unique folds and seams. From gowns to jeans, the couture designer has a signature style that must be appreciated.

Couture fashion photography is truly an art and an act of collaboration. Sam Dobrow has an eye for beauty and works together with the wardrobe stylist, make up artist, and hair stylist to present a fashion statement uniquely crafted for couture fashions.
