event photographyEvents are about people gathering for a purpose. It might be a personal gathering such as a wedding or bar mitzvah. You might be gathering for a business meeting or charitable cause. What ever the purpose of the meeting one thing is certain, people are interacting and they want to remember the good times. As photographer, it is important to mix in with the guests in a non obtrusive manner capturing both formal and casual images. A good event photographer has to mix flash with the available lighting and work with an environment that may not provide the best backdrop for portraits. It is important to know a little about the guests of honor and show up with a plan to get the formal shots as the event unfolds. Sam Dobrow approaches event photography with a sense of photojournalism. He looks for the story as it unfolds, identifies characters in the crowd, and casually snaps photos of people interacting with others; all the time thinking of the theme and how the images will lay out sequentially to tell the story.
